Gender Socialization in Latino/a Families: Outcomes from Two studies that are retrospective

Abstract

In this specific article, we provide findings from 2 studies built to explore socialization that is gender-related Latino/a families. In learn 1, 22 adult Latinas (ages 20–45) finished in-depth interviews. In learn 2, 166 Latino/a university students (58% females; M age 21.4 years) finished self-report studies. Research 1 findings claim that numerous Latino/a parents socialize their daughters in manners which are marked by “traditional” gender-related expectations and communications. Outcomes of research 2, including descriptive analyses together with creation of scales to explore family members correlates of gender-related socialization, help and expand these findings. Male and female respondents described various experiences of home tasks, socialization of gender-typed behavior, and freedom to pursue social tasks or access privileges. Parental characteristics, specially gender role attitudes, had been associated with gender-related socialization.
